GoHighLevel SMS Cost Calculator 2026: What You’ll Actually Pay Per Text

by | Aug 24, 2026 | 0 comments

TL;DR:

  • What it is: A calculator that shows the real monthly cost of texting through GoHighLevel, not just the advertised per-segment rate.
  • What it costs: SMS isn't included in any GoHighLevel plan, it bills separately through LC Phone, per segment, plus carrier pass-through fees and A2P charges.
  • Biggest hidden costs: carrier fees add 30 to 60 percent on top of the base rate, and a single emoji can multiply your segment count several times over.
  • Who it's for: agencies and businesses budgeting SMS spend, or deciding whether to rebill clients for it.

Your GoHighLevel subscription doesn't include texting. SMS bills separately, per segment, from a wallet that auto-recharges, and the advertised rate isn't what you actually pay. Enter your volume below to see the real monthly number, including the carrier fees and A2P charges most calculators leave out.

These usage costs sit on top of your Highlevel pricing plan: $97, $297 or $497/month. Before you commit budget, run your own numbers inside the platform, the usage meters show live spend against exactly the rates above.

How GoHighLevel Actually Bills SMS

Three things surprise people on their first bill.

It's not included in your plan. The $97, $297 and $497 tiers cover the platform. Messaging runs through LC Phone (HighLevel's layer over Twilio) and bills pay-as-you-go from a wallet that auto-recharges when it runs low. If you never check the wallet, you never see the spend.

You're billed per segment, not per message. A "text" in your head is one thing. A segment is 160 characters. A 300-character message is two segments and costs double.

Inbound costs the same as outbound. A two-way conversation roughly doubles the cost of a one-way broadcast. Every "STOP", every "yes", every reply you were hoping for is a billable segment.

The Segment Trap (And the Emoji Problem)

This is where budgets break, so it's worth understanding properly.

Plain text messages encode as GSM-7. You get 160 characters in a single segment. Go over and the message splits, but concatenated segments carry a header, so each one only holds 153 characters, not 160.

Add a single emoji, curly quote, em dash or accented character and the whole message re-encodes as UCS-2. Now a single segment holds 70 characters, and concatenated segments hold 67.

What that means in practice:

A 300-character message in plain text = 2 segments.
The same 300-character message with one emoji = 5 segments.
One emoji, two and a half times the cost.

Merge fields are the other trap. {{contact.first_name}} is 22 characters in the editor and might be 3 characters when sent, or 11. If your message sits near a segment boundary, some contacts get one segment and some get two, and your actual cost lands somewhere you didn't model. The calculator above uses your average, so pad it if you're close to a boundary.

Carrier Fees: The Number Nobody Quotes

Almost every GoHighLevel pricing article quotes the LC Phone base rate and stops there. That's not what leaves your wallet.

US carriers charge their own pass-through fee on every segment delivered, on top of what HighLevel charges. It varies by carrier: roughly $0.0035 to $0.0050 per segment depending on whether the recipient is on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or a smaller network. You don't get to choose; it depends on the phone you're texting.

In practice that pushes real cost 30–60% above the advertised base rate. Both AT&T and Verizon raised their fees in spring 2026, so older articles understate it further.

The calculator above includes a carrier fee layer by default. That's why its number is higher than most others you'll find, not because it's pessimistic, but because the others are incomplete.

A2P 10DLC Registration and Monthly Fees

Before you can text US numbers for business purposes, you must register under A2P 10DLC. This is a carrier requirement, not a HighLevel one, and it's enforced by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.

The failure mode is nasty: unregistered messages don't bounce. They're silently filtered. Your GoHighLevel sending log shows a successful send, the contact never receives anything, and you have no signal that it happened. Agencies have run entire campaigns into the void this way.

Registration involves a one-time brand fee, an optional one-time campaign vetting fee, and a recurring monthly campaign fee for as long as you keep sending. Exact figures are in the rate table below, and the calculator includes the monthly component when the A2P box is ticked.

Rebilling: Turning SMS Cost Into Margin

If you're running client sub-accounts, SMS doesn't have to be an expense. HighLevel lets you rebill usage to clients at a markup you set, so the cost line above becomes a revenue line instead.

Rebilling is the easy part, the SaaS model is the real move

Marking up SMS recovers your usage costs. White-labelling the whole platform and selling it as your own software is a different business entirely: recurring subscription revenue instead of retainers, and usage margin on top. That's what the SaaS Pro tier and the Saaspreneur programme are built for.

Seven Ways to Cut Your SMS Bill

  1. Drop the emojis. The single biggest lever available. Removing one emoji from a 300-character message takes it from five segments to two: a 60% cut on that message with no change to what it says.
  2. Write to 160, not to feel. Set a hard character budget per message and check the count before you save the template. Landing at 161 characters doubles the cost of every send in that sequence.
  3. Watch your merge fields. Test with your longest realistic first name and business name, not with "Bob".
  4. Clean the list. Invalid and landline numbers still cost you on the attempt. Run number validation before large sends.
  5. Cut the sequence, not the message. Most nurture sequences have one or two messages nobody responds to. Removing a message saves more than shortening five.
  6. Use email for the low-stakes touches. At roughly a fifteenth of the cost per contact, anything that doesn't need to be read within minutes should be an email.
  7. Rebill it. If you have client sub-accounts, usage cost is a pricing decision rather than an expense. See the section above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does GoHighLevel charge per text?

Roughly $0.0079 per segment for US and Canada through LC Phone, plus a carrier pass-through fee of about $0.0035–$0.0050 per segment. Real all-in cost for a registered US sender is typically $0.011–$0.013 per segment. A segment is 160 characters of plain text, or 70 if the message contains an emoji or special character.

Is SMS included in my GoHighLevel plan?

No. All three plans ($97, $297, $497) cover the platform only. SMS, MMS, voice, email and AI usage bill separately from a wallet that auto-recharges. Budget for an all-in monthly figure, not the subscription price.

Why is my GoHighLevel SMS bill higher than the advertised rate?

Three usual causes. Carrier fees add 30–60% on top of the base rate. Inbound replies bill at the same rate as outbound, so two-way conversations cost roughly double a broadcast. And messages over 160 characters, or any message containing an emoji, split into multiple billable segments.

Does an emoji really change the cost that much?

Yes. A single emoji switches the message encoding from GSM-7 to UCS-2, dropping the segment limit from 160 characters to 70. A 300-character message goes from 2 segments to 5. Nothing else about the message changes.

Do I have to register for A2P 10DLC?

For business texting to US numbers, yes, it's a carrier requirement enforced by AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. Unregistered messages are silently filtered rather than bounced, so your send log shows success while contacts receive nothing.

Can I charge my clients for SMS usage?

Yes. HighLevel supports rebilling usage to client sub-accounts at a markup you control. A 2× markup is common. See the rebilling calculator above for what that looks like across your account count.

Is LC Phone cheaper than connecting my own Twilio account?

LC Phone is built on Twilio and priced at a modest discount to Twilio list rates, with the advantage of no separate account to manage and native rebilling. Bringing your own Twilio can make sense at very high volume or where you already have negotiated rates, but you lose the integrated billing.

How do I see what I'm actually spending?

Your agency wallet and the billing dashboard show usage by sub-account. Check it monthly, because the wallet auto-recharges, overspend doesn't interrupt anything, which means nothing forces you to notice it.
