California

California isn't one market. It's five that don't behave alike.

An LA playbook loses money in San Diego. A Bay Area budget gets eaten alive by tech-sector auctions. Orange County buys differently than West LA, and the drive-time between them decides who ever sees your ad. We build campaigns per metro and we put the number we're accountable for in writing before we start.

California — The California Problem
The California problem

A statewide campaign is four wasted budgets and one that works.

Agencies treat California as a single line item because the map makes it look like one. It isn't. Los Angeles and San Francisco are 380 miles apart and share almost nothing about how their buyers search, what they'll pay, or when they're online.

Four things break the standard playbook here.

  • Five economies, one state line

Entertainment and DTC in LA. Enterprise software in the Bay. Biotech and defense in San Diego. Professional services in Orange County. The same ad copy can't carry all four, and statewide geo-targeting quietly funds the metros you don't want.

  • Tech money distorts the auction

Venture-funded companies in the Bay Area bid for talent, awareness, and share not payback. If your campaign competes on those keywords with a payback constraint, you lose. The answer is different terms, not a bigger budget.

  • Distance is a conversion problem

In LA and Orange County, a 12-mile radius can be a 50-minute drive. Service-area targeting drawn on mileage instead of drive-time generates leads your team can't profitably serve.

  • CCPA and CPRA change your tracking

California privacy law affects consent, data sharing with ad platforms, and how you handle opt-outs. Attribution built without it either breaks at audit or was never measuring correctly in the first place.

What we run

Nine channels. One accountable number.

We don't sell channels à la carte and hope they add up. Every engagement starts from the KPI you need to hit, then we staff only the channels that move it.

California — Process
How it works

From first call to first report.

Four steps, in this order, every time. Calls run on your clock, not ours.

Step one

Audit

We review your site, ad accounts, and the competitors outranking you in your specific metro not statewide averages. You get the findings whether or not you hire us.

Day 1
Step two

Agree the KPI

We put one number in writing the metric the engagement is judged on along with the timeline to hit it. Nothing starts before you sign off.

Day 1–2
Step three

Build & launch

Tracking goes in first CCPA-aware from the start then campaigns and pages. Your accounts stay in your name.

Day 2–5
Step four

Report & adjust

Monthly reporting against the agreed KPI, broken out by metro, plus a quarterly review with your senior strategist.

California — FAQ
Questions

Before you call.

Do you have a California office?

No - our office is in Midtown Manhattan and we work with California clients remotely. We say that plainly because the alternative is a virtual address that means nothing. What we do have is Pacific Time coverage from 7am to 7pm PT, so calls, approvals, and campaign changes happen on your clock, not three hours ahead of it. If you want to meet in person, we're in California for industry conferences several times a year.

Can you really understand my market from the East Coast?

Market intelligence comes from the account data, not the zip code of the desk. What matters is whether we've worked the specific competitive set and California is our second-largest market by client count. We'll show you the competitor teardown for your metro on the first call, and you can judge from there whether we know the difference between ranking in San Francisco and ranking in Palo Alto.

How does CCPA affect my campaigns?

The California Consumer Privacy Act, as amended by the CPRA, gives California residents rights over how their data is collected, sold, and shared including data passed to advertising platforms. Practically, that shapes your consent banner, your "Do Not Sell or Share" handling, and how conversion data reaches Google and Meta. We build tracking with that in mind from the start. We're not your legal counsel, so confirm your specific obligations with a privacy attorney.

How much does this cost?

Engagements start at $5,000 per month, which covers both your media budget and our fees. We quote it as one number because splitting them invites the wrong conversation what matters is the total you invest and the return it produces. Where the money lands depends on your goal, and we'll show you the split we recommend before you commit anything.

Do you target the whole state or one metro?

One metro to start, almost always. Statewide targeting spreads a budget thin enough that no single market gets the frequency it needs, and it hides which metro is actually working. We prove the model in one market, then expand into the next with the winning structure already built.

Am I locked into a contract?

No. Onboarding has a defined scope and duration because the setup work is front-loaded. After that, engagements run month-to-month with standard notice.

Do I own my ad accounts and data?

Yes. Your Google Ads, Meta, analytics, and Google Business Profile stay in your name with you as owner. If the relationship ends, nothing has to be rebuilt and nothing walks out the door.

How long before I see results?

Paid channels produce data in the first two weeks and meaningful optimization by week six. SEO in these markets is a six-to-twelve month program, not a quarter. We'll tell you which of the two your goal actually requires before you commit budget.

Tell us the number you need to hit.

We'll tell you whether we can hit it in your metro, what it will take, and what it will cost on the first call, not after three rounds of discovery.
