Toronto & the GTA

Toronto doesn't search the way your template assumes.

Half the GTA speaks a language other than English at home, the 416 and the 905 behave like different cities, and CASL makes the email tactics that work in the US straightforwardly illegal here. American playbooks don't cross the border intact. We rebuild them for the market that's actually there.

The Toronto problem

A US campaign doesn't port. It has to be rebuilt.

Agencies treat Canada as an extension of the US account: same keywords, same creative, currency switched, geo widened. It rarely works, and when it fails the diagnosis is usually "Canada is a small market" rather than the four specific things that actually went wrong.

Here's what breaks.

  • CASL is not CAN-SPAM

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation requires express or clearly implied consent before a commercial message is sent, with records to prove it, and penalties reaching into the millions for businesses. The US-standard opt-out model isn't a lighter version of compliance here. It's non-compliance.

  • The GTA searches in many languages

Toronto is one of the most linguistically diverse cities in the world. English-only keyword sets miss real, high-intent demand in Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Tagalog, Urdu, and more, often in exactly the suburbs where your growth is.

  • Thin auctions starve automated bidding

Canadian search volume is a fraction of the US equivalent. Performance Max and other machine-learning campaigns that thrive on American conversion data can stall here for months. The fix is sequencing, not patience.

  • 416 and 905 are different customers

Downtown buyers are transit-bound and time-poor; suburban buyers drive, compare, and travel further for the right provider. One service radius across the GTA serves neither of them properly.

What we run

Nine channels. One accountable number.

We don't sell channels à la carte and hope they add up. Every engagement starts from the KPI you need to hit, then we staff only the channels that move it.

DMB — Toronto: Process Section
How it works

From first call to first report.

Four steps, in this order, every time. You'll know where you are and what happens next.

Step one

Audit

We review your site, ad accounts, and the competitors outranking you across the 416 and the 905, including in languages other than English. You keep the findings either way.

Day 1
Step two

Agree the KPI

One number in writing, in Canadian dollars, along with the timeline to hit it. Nothing starts before you sign off.

Day 1-2
Step three

Build & launch

Tracking and consent capture go in first, reviewed against CASL and PIPEDA, then campaigns and pages. Your accounts stay in your name.

Day 2-5
Step four

Report & adjust

Monthly reporting against the agreed KPI, broken out by market and by language, plus a quarterly review with your senior strategist.

Questions

Before you call.

Do you have a Toronto office?

No, our office is in Midtown Manhattan and we work with Toronto clients remotely. We say that plainly because the alternative is a virtual address that means nothing. Toronto is on Eastern Time, the same as us, so there's no lag at all, your 9am is our 9am, and approvals happen the same hour you ask for them.

What is CASL and how does it change my campaigns?

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation governs commercial electronic messages, email, SMS, and some social messaging. Unlike the US opt-out model under CAN-SPAM, CASL generally requires express or clearly implied consent before you send, along with records demonstrating that consent, prescribed sender identification, and a working unsubscribe. Penalties are substantial. Practically, it means consent capture is designed into the funnel from the start rather than retrofitted. We're not your legal counsel, so confirm your specific obligations with a Canadian privacy lawyer.

Do you run campaigns in languages other than English?

Yes, as separate campaigns with their own keyword sets and copy written for the market rather than machine-translated into it. Which languages depends on your customers and your submarkets, a dental practice in Markham and a contractor in Brampton are reaching very different audiences. We identify the opportunity during the audit rather than assuming it.

How much does this cost?

Engagements start at $5,000 per month, covering both media budget and our fees. We quote it as one number because what matters is the total you invest and the return it produces, and we'll show you the recommended split before you commit.

Why does a smaller market need a different approach?

Because automated bidding needs conversion volume to learn from. Campaign types that stabilise in three weeks on a US account can take months on Canadian volume, and firms that launch them first often conclude the channel doesn't work. We sequence deliberately, build the conversion history on tightly controlled search campaigns, then hand it to the automated ones once there's enough data to feed them.

Do you work outside the GTA?

Yes, Ottawa, Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and elsewhere in Ontario, plus other Canadian markets on request. Note that Quebec carries additional French-language requirements for commercial communication, which we'd scope separately rather than fold into an Ontario campaign.

Can you help us sell into the US?

That's a common reason Canadian businesses work with us. We have extensive experience in the US market, so we understand the differences in search behavior, competition, pricing expectations, and compliance. We help Canadian firms adapt their marketing strategy for the US market rather than simply copying what works in Canada.

Do I own my ad accounts and data?

Yes. Your Google Ads, Meta, analytics, and Google Business Profile stay in your name with you as owner. If the relationship ends, nothing has to be rebuilt and nothing walks out the door.
