Your “Top” Legal Marketing Agency Spent $3,400/Day on Morgan & Morgan’s Name

by | Aug 28, 2026 | 0 comments

TL;DR:

  • $15,967/day in total search term spend from a single ad group. Nearly all of it went to competitor brand names that will never convert.
  • $3,400/day on Morgan & Morgan terms alone: 34 clicks from people looking for a different firm, at $100 avg. CPC.
  • Zero negative keywords added in 4 months. The campaign ran on phrase match with no management, and the most basic PPC hygiene wasn't done once.
  • The fix takes 30 minutes a week: add competitor names as negative keywords, lock match types, and audit the search terms report. This is baseline management, not advanced strategy.
  • Free audit available. We'll pull your search terms report, identify the waste, and show you what a managed campaign looks like, at no cost and no obligation.

A real Google Ads audit from a California personal injury firm. Names removed. Numbers real. Four months of unmanaged campaigns. This is what we found in the first ten minutes.

What We Found in the First 10 Minutes

Last week, one of California's top personal injury attorneys contacted us to audit their Google Ads account. They'd been with a well-known legal marketing agency for over four months. The agency had a reputation. They had case studies. They had a nice dashboard.

They also had a campaign spending $15,967 per day on search terms that included other law firms' names.

The keyword triggering all of this was "accident attorney injury" on phrase match (close variant). Here's what that keyword was actually matching to:

Search terms report single ad group single day. Every top term is a competitors name
Search terms report, single ad group, single day. Every top term is a competitor's name.
Search termClicksAvg. CPCCost
morgan and morgan law firm15$93.85$1,407.68
acts law firm5$126.18$630.88

weitz and luxembourg law firm1$407.03$407.03
ann phong lawyer2$198.15$396.29
morgan & morgan attorneys at law2$168.97$337.95
morgan & morgan law firm4$83.12$332.46

Every single one of these is a competitor branded search. Someone typed "Morgan and Morgan law firm" into Google, meaning they already know which firm they want, and this client's ad showed up, got clicked, and cost $93.85. The person was never going to hire them. They were looking for Morgan & Morgan's phone number.

This isn't a targeting strategy. It's a donation to Google.

The Morgan & Morgan Problem: $3,400/Day on One Competitor

When we filtered the search terms report for just "morgan," the numbers got worse.

34 clicks. $3,405.96. One day. One competitor.

Filtered for morgan 34 clicks 3405.96 one day

Someone searched "morgan & morgan office", they wanted an office address, and this firm paid $141.06 for that click. Someone searched "morgan and morgan irvine", looking for a specific Morgan & Morgan location, and this firm paid $62.91. Twice.

Over a 30-day month, $3,400/day on Morgan & Morgan terms alone is $102,000/month. Over the four months this campaign ran unmanaged, that's potentially $400,000+ spent on people who were actively looking for a different firm. That's not a rounding error. That's a down payment on a building.

Why This Happens

This isn't a Google bug. It's a management failure.

Phrase match (close variant), the match type shown on every row, tells Google: "show my ad for searches that are close in meaning to my keyword." The keyword is "accident attorney injury." Google's algorithm decided that "Morgan and Morgan law firm" is semantically close enough because Morgan & Morgan is a personal injury firm.

Technically, Google is correct: the concepts are related. Practically, the intent is completely different. Someone searching for a firm by name has already chosen. They're not your lead.

The fix is negative keywords. You add "morgan," "acts law firm," "omega law group," "weitz," "ann phong," and every other competitor name to a negative keyword list. Those searches stop triggering your ads. Your budget goes to people actually looking for a personal injury lawyer, not a specific one they already chose.

This takes about 30 minutes of work per week. It wasn't done once in four months.

Nobody Was Watching

The search terms report is the first thing any competent PPC manager checks. It's not buried. It's not hard to find. It's a tab in the Google Ads interface. If anyone at the managing agency had opened this report even once per month, the competitor brand waste would have been obvious within 60 seconds.

The fact that it ran for four months means one of two things:

  1. Nobody looked. The campaign was set up, launched, and left on autopilot. The agency collected their management fee without doing the management.
  2. They looked and didn't act. Some agencies leave competitor terms running because the click volume makes the total spend look impressive in their own reporting dashboards. Higher spend equals a bigger account, which equals a bigger fee.

Either explanation should concern any law firm currently paying a Google Ads management fee.

What a Managed Campaign Looks Like

For comparison, here's what the same keyword structure looks like under proper PPC management:

  • Negative keyword lists reviewed weekly: every competitor name, every irrelevant variation, every "free," "DIY," "reddit," and "salary" query is blocked before it spends a second dollar.
  • Search terms report audited daily for the first 30 days, then weekly once the negatives are stable. This is baseline hygiene, not advanced strategy.
  • Competitor conquesting is a deliberate choice, not an accident. If you want to bid on "Morgan and Morgan" you can, but it goes in a separate campaign with its own budget cap, its own ad copy addressing why your firm is the alternative, and a measured CPA target. Not a phrase-match keyword leaking into branded searches at $100+ per click.
  • Match types are chosen with intent. Phrase match on broad, high-volume terms like "accident attorney injury" is inherently risky. Exact match or tightly themed ad groups with layered negatives control what actually triggers your ads. For local PI firms, Google Local Services Ads often deliver better cost-per-lead than search ads, and they charge per lead, not per click, which eliminates the competitor-brand waste problem entirely.

How to Check Your Own Account

If you're a law firm paying for Google Ads management, here's a five-minute self-audit:

  1. Log into your Google Ads account. If your agency won't give you access, that's its own red flag.
  2. Click into any Search campaign, then Ad Groups, then pick one.
  3. Click "Search terms" in the left sidebar.
  4. Sort by Cost (descending).
  5. Read the actual search queries people typed before clicking your ad.

If you see competitor law firm names, generic questions like "how to file a lawsuit," or searches for lawyers in cities you don't serve, and nobody has added them as negative keywords, your campaign has the same problem this one did. And if your search terms are clean but leads still aren't converting, the problem may be the landing page. A conversion rate audit catches what the ad account can't.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is bidding on competitor keywords ever a good idea?

Yes, when it's deliberate. Competitor conquesting can work for law firms, but it needs to be in its own campaign with its own budget cap, tailored ad copy that positions your firm as the alternative, and a CPA target you've agreed to in advance. What doesn't work is a generic injury keyword accidentally matching to competitor names with no one noticing for four months. That's not a strategy, it's negligence.

2. How much of this spend was actually wasted?

The Morgan & Morgan filter alone (34 clicks, $3,405.96) is essentially 100% waste. Nobody searching "morgan & morgan office" is going to hire a different firm. Scale that across the other competitor names visible in the report (Acts Law Firm, Omega Law Group, Weitz & Luxembourg, Ann Phong), and the daily competitor-brand waste is conservatively $5,000-$8,000/day. Over four months, that's $600K-$960K.

3. Why didn't Google catch this?

Google's job is to match search queries to ads. Their algorithm correctly identified that "Morgan and Morgan" is semantically related to "accident attorney injury," since both involve personal injury law. Google is a platform, not a campaign manager. It's the managing agency's job to add negative keywords so the platform doesn't match your ads to searches that will never convert. Google makes more money when you don't do this.

4. How do I know if my agency is actually managing my account?

Ask for three things: (1) Your search terms report for the last 30 days, sorted by cost. (2) Your negative keyword list, how many terms are on it and when it was last updated. (3) The change history log showing what adjustments were made this month. If they can't or won't provide these, the account isn't being managed. It's being charged for.

5. What does a proper negative keyword list look like for a PI firm?

For a personal injury firm, a working negative list typically has 200-500+ terms and grows every week. It includes every competitor firm name in your market, every non-PI legal term (divorce, bankruptcy, immigration, criminal), every informational query (how to, what is, reddit, quora), every salary/job search, and every geographic area you don't serve. If your list has fewer than 50 terms after four months, it hasn't been maintained.

6. Can you audit our account without us switching agencies?

Yes. We run audits as a standalone service, so you get a full report showing what's wasted, what's working, and what a managed structure would look like. You can take that report to your current agency and ask them to fix it, or you can switch to us, or you can do nothing. The audit is free and the findings are yours either way.

7. Who was the client and which agency was managing the account?

We've withheld both names to protect client confidentiality. The patterns shown here, including competitor brand leakage, no negative keywords, and unmonitored phrase match, are not unique to this account. We see the same problems in roughly 70% of the law firm accounts we audit, across agencies of all sizes.
