150 leads a month. The constraint was never the ads.

We built the campaigns, the landing page, and the automation that sorted every enquiry by matter type before it reached an attorney's calendar. It worked — and then the data showed the real bottleneck sat past the consultation, in the firm's fee structure. So we said so.

$4,750/month all in - $3,500 media, $1,250 management. Full numbers, the automation build, and where the funnel actually broke are below. Skip to the honest part ↓

Client: Emmerth Divorce Law · Scope: Google Ads Management Service, Landing Page Design, CRM Automation · Duration: 2 years

150Leads per month
$32Cost per lead
38Consults booked monthly
$1,188Cost per retained client

TL;DR:

  • The client: A Chicagoland family law firm handling divorce, custody, post-decree modifications and prenuptial agreements.
  • The investment: $4,750/month: $3,500 in Google Ads spend plus $1,250 in management.
  • The output: ~150 leads/month at $32 each, 38 consultations booked, 4 clients retained. That's $1,188 per retained client against case values starting around $7,000.
  • The build: A dedicated landing page, search and call campaigns, and CRM automation that identified which service each lead needed before it reached the attorney's calendar.
  • The honest finding: Lead volume was never the constraint. 38 consults produced 4 retainers, and that gap sat inside the firm's pricing and consultation process, not in the ad account.

This case study is one example of how a focused Digital Marketing for Family Law strategy performs when it's built around real intake data rather than lead volume alone.

Three Services, One Search Category

Family law looks like one market from the outside. In an ad account it behaves like three, and they have almost nothing in common except the words people type.

ServiceRelative valueUrgencyBuying window
Prenuptial agreementLowest, flat feeLowWeeks before a wedding date
Custody / post-decreeMidHigh, often court-drivenImmediate
Contested divorceHighestHighImmediate, long decision cycle

Here's the operational problem that creates. In a lead notification email, all three look identical: a name, a phone number, a form fill. A prenup enquiry and a contested divorce enquiry arrive in exactly the same envelope.

For a firm where the attorneys are also the intake team, that matters enormously. Every consultation is 30 minutes of the most expensive time in the business. Spend it on a prenup that yields a modest flat fee and you haven't lost money exactly, but you've spent a slot that a contested divorce enquiry needed.

At 150 leads a month, that's not a rounding error. It's the difference between a calendar that works and one that doesn't.

What We Built

A dedicated landing page

Paid traffic went to a purpose-built page rather than the firm's general site. Someone searching for a divorce attorney at 11pm isn't browsing practice areas, they want to know they're in the right place, that a first conversation costs nothing, and how to start one. The page did those three things and nothing else.

Search and call campaigns

Two campaign types running in parallel:

  • Search: driving to the landing page, covering divorce, custody, post-decree and prenup intent as separate ad groups with separate messaging.
  • Call campaigns: for mobile searchers who want to speak to someone immediately, skipping the landing page entirely.

Geography covered Cook County and the surrounding Illinois counties, matched to where the firm actually appears in court rather than a radius around the office.

CRM automation: the part that mattered

This is where the engagement differed from a standard legal ads build, and it's covered in full below.

The Triage Automation

Every lead, form fill or call, entered an automated SMS marketing strategy and email marketing strategy sequence that did two jobs at once.

Job one: reach them before a competitor does

Someone contacting a divorce attorney is usually contacting two or three. The first firm to respond meaningfully has an enormous advantage, and no solo or small practice can answer every enquiry within minutes by hand. Automated first contact went out immediately, at any hour, every time.

Job two: find out what they actually need

The sequence asked conversational, non-clinical questions designed to surface the matter type without feeling like a form: what the person was dealing with, whether anything had been filed, whether there was a date attached to it.

The answers routed the lead:

  • Contested divorce or urgent custody: flagged as priority, straight to a consultation slot
  • Prenup: routed to a lighter-touch path with clear expectations set on scope and cost before any attorney time was committed
  • Early-stage or exploratory: held in a nurture sequence rather than consuming a consult slot before the person was ready
  • Out of scope or out of state: filtered out automatically
The attorney stopped opening the calendar to find out what a lead wanted. He opened it already knowing.

That's the real deliverable. Not 150 leads, 150 leads sorted, with the highest-value matters surfaced first and the lowest-value ones handled without burning a consultation slot. This is what a properly built Lead Generation strategy looks like once volume and value are treated as two separate problems.

The Numbers

MetricMonthly average
Google Ads spend$3,500
Management fee$1,250
Total investment$4,750
Leads generated~150
Cost per lead~$32
Consultations booked (25%)~38
Cost per booked consultation~$125
Clients retained4
Cost per retained client~$1,188

Against case values starting around $7,000, a $1,188 acquisition cost is comfortable economics. A $32 cost per lead in family law, one of the most competitive categories in Google Ads management, is a strong number in its own right.

We're not publishing the firm's revenue figures. Run $1,188 against your own average case value; that's the only comparison that tells you anything useful.

Where the Funnel Actually Broke

Here's the part most agency case studies leave out.

Of 38 consultations booked each month, roughly 4 became retained clients. That's about a 10% consult-to-retainer rate, and it's the number that limited the entire engagement.

It's tempting to read that as a lead quality problem. It wasn't. These were people who searched for a family law attorney, engaged with an SMS conversation about their situation, and then committed to a scheduled consultation. That's a serious signal of intent. Volume wasn't the issue either: 150 leads a month is more than a small practice can process.

The constraint was price. Prospects consistently reached the consultation, understood the fee structure, and decided it was more than they were prepared to spend. That's not something an ad account can fix. No amount of keyword refinement changes what someone will pay for a service.

What we did about it

We surfaced it directly rather than reporting around it. When the data showed the bottleneck sitting past the consultation rather than before it, we said so and set out the options as we saw them:

  • Adjust the offer: payment plans, unbundled services, or a limited-scope option for prospects who can't fund a full retainer
  • Reset the messaging: set fee expectations earlier so price-sensitive prospects self-select out before taking a consultation slot
  • Target upmarket: shift keywords and geography toward higher-asset matters where the fee structure meets less resistance
  • Change nothing: 4 clients a month at $1,188 acquisition cost is a functioning business, if that volume is enough

Those are all decisions for the firm, not the agency. We can put qualified people in front of an attorney at a predictable cost. What happens in the consultation room, the fee structure, the conversation, the close, belongs to the practice. It's also where a broader Digital Marketing for Law Firm engagement earns its keep: pairing the right traffic with the right conversation once someone actually reaches out.

If you're spending on ads and your consultation-to-retainer rate is under 20%, buying more leads is the most expensive way to avoid the actual problem.

What We'd Tell the Next Family Law Firm

  1. Segment by matter type before the consultation, not during it. Divorce, custody and prenup enquiries look identical on arrival and are worth very different amounts. Sorting them automatically is the highest-leverage thing you can build.
  2. Automated first contact isn't impersonal, it's the only way to be first. Prospects are contacting several firms in one sitting. Responding in minutes at 11pm beats responding thoughtfully at 9am.
  3. Track cost per retained client, not cost per lead. $32 leads mean nothing on their own. $1,188 per signed client against a $7,000 matter means everything.
  4. Know your consult-to-retainer rate before you increase spend. If it's low, more traffic multiplies the leak instead of fixing it. Fix the close first.

Would we run this campaign again?

Yes, the acquisition side worked. $32 leads and $1,188 per retained client in family law is a result we'd repeat. But we'd have the pricing conversation in month one rather than month twelve, because that's where the ceiling actually was. We'd rather tell you that up front than sell you traffic that won't convert. It's also why we treat Digital Marketing for Family Law as more than an ad account, the traffic is only half the engagement, and the other half is knowing where the funnel actually breaks.

About these results: Figures reflect monthly averages from a two-year engagement with a Chicagoland family law practice, published without identifying the firm. Results depend on practice area, geography, case values, market competition, fee structure and the firm's own intake and conversion processes. Past performance for one client is not a guarantee or prediction of results for another.
