Google Ads for Ricarda’s: Small Budget, Consistent Event Leads

We helped a downtown Toronto venue attract around 20 corporate event inquiries each month by targeting event planners with a focused $600 monthly ad budget.

Client: Ricarda's, French bistro, café and event venue, downtown Toronto · Scope: Google Local Ads + Meta (Facebook Ads Services & Instagram Ads Services) · Ran: 12 months

TL;DR:

  • The client: Ricarda's, a downtown Toronto French bistro with a café and a separate Atrium event space, marketing to corporate event planners.
  • The budget: $300/month Google Ads, $300/month Meta, plus $400/month management. Under $1,000 all in.
  • The result: Around 20 qualified leads generated a month, calls and contact form submissions, at roughly $30 per inquiry in media cost, or $50 including our fee.
  • The job: Separating corporate event buyers out of a traffic stream dominated by people looking for brunch.
  • What we can't tell you: How many of those inquiries became booked events. We'll explain why below, and what we'd do differently.

One Brand, Two Completely Different Buyers

Ricarda's sells two things that have almost nothing in common.

The first is a meal. Someone books brunch on Saturday, decides in under two minutes, and spends what a brunch costs.

The second is a venue. A corporate event planner books the Atrium for a company function, spends weeks deciding, needs a site visit, involves an approver, and is comparing three or four venues at a value many multiples higher.

Both of those buyers arrive at the same website, the same Instagram account and the same Google Business Profile. Even with effective Google Business Profile management, a restaurant's event offering can still get buried behind menus, food photos and everyday dining information. The planner has to dig for the information that actually matters to them.

The job wasn't to generate traffic. It was to pull one specific buyer out of a stream aimed at somebody else.

What We Ran on $600

At this budget you cannot be everywhere. Every dollar had to go toward the corporate buyer specifically, which meant deliberately ignoring restaurant and brunch traffic the venue was already getting for free. This campaign ran alongside Ricarda's existing local SEO strategy, but paid media carried the corporate-event targeting specifically, since organic visibility alone wasn't reaching planners fast enough.

ChannelBudgetJob
Google Ads (local) $300/mo Capture planners already searching: corporate event venue, private event space, corporate catering, all tightly geo-fenced to downtown Toronto. Low volume, high intent, expensive clicks.
Meta (Facebook & Instagram) $300/mo Reach the planner who hasn't started searching yet. Geographic and workplace-based targeting around the downtown core, with imagery of the space set up for events rather than plated food.

Why the split mattered

Search alone would have capped out fast, "corporate event venue Toronto" is a small monthly search volume, and at $300 you exhaust it quickly. Meta alone would have generated interest without intent. A well-targeted Social Media Advertising push on Meta reaches planners before they've started searching, while search catches them the moment they do. Running both meant catching planners at the moment they searched and planting the venue with planners weeks before they started looking.

The creative did the separating

Restaurant marketing leads with food. Event marketing has to lead with the room: capacity, layout, how a corporate function actually looks in the space. A planner needs to picture 80 people standing with drinks, not a beautifully lit entrée. Ad creative and landing traffic pointed at the events and catering content, not the menus.

The Q4 Concentration

Corporate event demand is not evenly distributed. Holiday party planning drives a heavy concentration of inquiries into the autumn, and planners tend to book that season well before the season arrives.

We weighted spend toward that window rather than running flat monthly budgets. On a $600/month media budget that mattered more than it would at $6,000: with a small budget, the question isn't only where you spend but when. Spending evenly across twelve months in a business with a concentrated buying season is how small budgets waste themselves.

The Numbers

MetricMonthly average
Google Ads spend$300
Meta spend$300
Management fee$400
Total investment$1,000
Inquiries (calls + form submissions)~20
Cost per inquiry, media only~$30
Cost per inquiry, all-in~$50

For context: corporate event bookings at a downtown Toronto venue routinely run into four and five figures. At $50 per inquiry all-in, the arithmetic only needs a small fraction of those inquiries to convert before the channel pays for itself several times over.

What We Couldn't Measure, and Why That Matters

Here's the limitation we're not going to write around.

We tracked inquiries. We never saw bookings. Calls and contact form submissions were measured on our side; what happened afterwards, which inquiries the events team converted, at what value, was never shared with us. So we can report cost per inquiry, and we cannot report return on ad spend.

That's a real gap, and it's a common one in venue and hospitality marketing. Event bookings close over phone calls, site visits and emailed proposals, usually in a separate system from anything the marketing side touches. Without a deliberate connection between the two, Google Ads management can optimize campaigns for inquiries, but not necessarily for the bookings that happen after the initial contact.

What we'd do differently now

  • Agree a booking feedback loop before launch: even a monthly spreadsheet marking which inquiries became events would close the gap
  • Track inquiry type, not just inquiry count: a corporate holiday party and a 12-person lunch enquiry are not the same result
  • Push conversion data back into the ad platforms so bidding optimises toward the inquiries that actually book, not just the ones that arrive

We'd rather publish that honestly than dress up a top-of-funnel number as a revenue result.

What This Says About Small Budgets

The reason we're publishing a campaign this small is that most local businesses assume paid advertising starts at several thousand a month. It doesn't, but small budgets only work under specific conditions:

  1. Pick one buyer and ignore the rest. $600 spread across every audience reaches nobody. $600 aimed at corporate event planners in a defined postal radius does real work.
  2. Match spend to your buying season. Concentrated demand deserves concentrated budget.
  3. Sell a high-value product. $50 per inquiry is excellent against a five-figure booking and terrible against a $30 lunch. The math only works when the product carries it.
  4. Close the measurement loop from day one. The most valuable thing we'd add to this campaign isn't budget. It's knowing which inquiries booked.

About these results: This campaign ran for twelve months in [MONTH YEAR – MONTH YEAR]. Figures are monthly averages and reflect inquiries, phone calls and contact form submissions, only; booking and revenue outcomes were not tracked on our side and no return-on-spend claim is made. The advertising landscape has changed substantially since this campaign ran, particularly on Meta following Apple's App Tracking Transparency changes in 2021, which reshaped audience targeting and attribution. Results depend on market, venue type, seasonality, pricing and the client's own sales process. Past performance for one client is not a guarantee or prediction of results for another.
