Our YouTube Copyright Strike with Storyful: What Happened
At DiscoverMyBusiness, we value creativity, ethical marketing, and transparent communication. As an agency helping businesses grow their online presence, we know how important it is to respect content ownership and follow platform guidelines.
But what happens when you do everything right, acknowledge a mistake, remove disputed content, reach out in good faith, yet still find yourself penalized?
That’s exactly what happened when Storyful, a company under Newswire, hit our YouTube channel with a copyright strike. Even after we removed the content, they refused to clear the strike unless we paid for a license, turning a simple compliance issue into a monetization demand.
We’re sharing this experience to highlight the real risks small businesses face, and to help others understand that removing content doesn’t always resolve copyright strikes. Our goal is to educate and advocate for fairer practices.

What Happened on Our YouTube Channel
Earlier this month, our team published a YouTube Short featuring trending content. Shortly after, we received a copyright strike notification from YouTube, filed by Storyful, which claimed that the video used their licensed material without permission.
We immediately removed the video upon receiving the notice and reached out to Storyful to formally apologize and request that they retract the strike. Here’s a portion of our outreach:
“The content has been removed from our channel, and we fully respect your rights as the original content owner. We would greatly appreciate it if you would consider retracting the copyright strike, as it affects the performance and compliance status of our channel.”
— Ali Haider, Social Media Manager, DiscoverMyBusiness
We believed that would be the end of it. It wasn’t.
Storyful’s Monetization Demand: Pay or Keep the Strike
In response to our request, Storyful refused to remove the strike unless we paid. They presented two options:
€500 per video to license the disputed content and have the strike lifted.
A $1,000 monthly subscription providing access to their library of over 140,000 licensed videos with:
- Unlimited downloads.
- Monetization rights across all social media platforms.
- Whitelisting for our pages.
- No requirement to remove content after ending the partnership.
They framed this offer as a “limited-time” discount, urging us to act before the week’s end.
While we appreciated the clarity of their offer, we found it unreasonable to demand payment for content we had already removed. Our intent had never been to monetize the content unfairly, and we took immediate action to resolve the issue.
Attempting to Evaluate the Partnership Offer
Wanting to explore a potential long-term partnership, we asked Storyful for demo access to review their video library.
What followed was a frustrating technical loop:
- First demo link failed.
- We requested a new link, but it failed again.
- Storyful advised us to use incognito mode and clear cookies, still no success.
- We shared our CEO Yauheni’s email to try enabling access on his end.
- Storyful insisted the invite had been accepted, but we still couldn’t view the library.
After several failed attempts and wasted hours, we decided not to move forward with their subscription.
Our Final Good-Faith Offer to Storyful
After technical access issues and deciding not to move forward with their subscription, we reached out one last time to resolve the matter in good faith.
Recognizing that we had already removed the video and that licensing no longer made sense for a removed asset, we proposed a multi-layered resolution:
Affiliate Partnership Offer
We offered to join forces with Storyful as an affiliate partner, promoting their services to our clients and audience. As a digital marketing agency with an active network of businesses looking for media resources, we believed this could provide mutual long-term value without the need for punitive payments.
Referral Program Proposal
We expressed willingness to refer clients directly to Storyful, offering them free visibility and potential business through our platforms, content, and client relationships.
However, Storyful rejected both offers outright. They refused to consider any partnership, affiliate program, or referral opportunity. Instead, they reiterated their demand for monetary compensation, framing the copyright strike as a “reparation” for the unauthorized use of the content, even though the content had already been removed.
“The video was used on your YouTube page without a proper license and without permission from the uploader. Without payment, we will not be able to remove the strike we issued.”
— Storyful Rights Management Team
By insisting on monetary reparation over collaborative resolution, Storyful made it clear that their only path forward was paid licensing, regardless of our corrective actions or partnership offers.
Who Is Storyful? The Newswire Connection
For those unfamiliar, Storyful is part of Newswire, a well-known platform for press release distribution. Newswire’s pricing starts at around $300 per press release, helping businesses gain media exposure across leading outlets.
However, businesses looking for affordable and ethical Digital PR solutions have alternatives. At DiscoverMyBusiness, we offer exclusive discounted PR packages that give you visibility without the risk of rigid, monetization-first policies.
Why We’re Sharing This Publicly
We aren’t writing this post to call out Storyful specifically, but to raise awareness about how these practices affect small businesses.
We believe:
- Removing content in good faith should be enough to resolve a copyright dispute.
- Rigid monetization demands hurt creators, agencies, and businesses trying to operate ethically.
- Alternative resolution methods, like partnerships or education, should be considered before issuing financial penalties.
We know we aren’t alone in facing these challenges, and we want to help others understand what to expect.
Key Lessons for Content Creators and Businesses
- Verify Licensing Before Posting
Double-check that you own or have licensed any content you share online. - Act Fast on Copyright Claims
If you receive a strike, remove the content immediately and document your actions. - Keep Detailed Records
Save all emails, screenshots, and timestamps. You may need them if negotiations stall. - Prepare for Monetization Pressures
Some companies may refuse to remove strikes unless you pay, even if the content has already been removed. - Seek Ethical Media Partnerships
Look for partners and providers who value fairness, transparency, and affordability, like our Digital PR services.
Final Thoughts: Advocating for Fairer Industry Standards
Our experience with Storyful highlights an industry-wide issue that goes beyond one company. It shows how copyright enforcement can become a commercial strategy, leaving small businesses with limited options.
We hope sharing our experience:
- Educates others about the risks of using third-party content without verified licenses.
- Encourages businesses to take corrective action quickly when mistakes happen.
- Promotes dialogue about fairer, more ethical copyright enforcement policies.
At DiscoverMyBusiness, we remain committed to ethical content practices and supporting businesses through affordable digital marketing solutions.
