How Google Ads for Political Campaigns are Changing This 2022

Google Ads might have been specifically designed for B2C companies, but it’s also a valuable tool for political campaigns. Thousands of politicians and government organizations use Google Ads to raise awareness, separate their brands from the competition, and gain new supporters.

A political campaign can be challenging and stressful. However, when the right tools and techniques are used to achieve the goal, it can be a lot of fun. Because of all of the hard work to achieve success in political campaigning, Google Ads is one of the most effective tools for running campaigns.

No More Election Ad Serving Exceptions

Starting on February 15, 2022, the Google Ads Political content policy will be updated and enforced. This will eliminate existing products, services, and news exemptions to Election Ads policies globally.

Product, service, and news ads will no longer be exempt from Google Election Ads policies when it takes into effect. Violation of the policy will not result in immediate account suspension with no prior warning. Instead, you will receive a warning at least seven days before the suspension of the account.

Election Ad Serving Options Expansion

There will also be an election ad serving options expansion on February 15, 2022. As of now, election ads can only serve in the country or region to which the ad content pertains. Next month, this will change for advertisers who have accomplished election ads or advertiser identity verification. With that, they will be eligible to serve ads in their home country or region within the election ads policy scope pertaining to a different country or region.

New Verification Requirements

On January 24, 2022, Google will enforce new verification requirements. Google will no longer accept W9 forms for identity verification for US election ads verification. Instead, they will require Employer Identification number (EIN) verification and accept the following forms:

  • Any document, notice, or letter issued by the IRS or stamped by the IRS that states the organization’ name and EIN
  • 8871 or 990 forms submitted to the IRS
  • Most recent SEC filing
  • Bank statements within the last three months
  • Credit reports from Experian, TransUnion, Equifax, or Dun & Bradstreet

The Role of Social Media in Political Google Ad Campaigns

Social media will have a big role in political campaigns. With Google Ads, social media, and other tools in the hands of candidates and their campaign managers, they can get an edge over other candidates.

Social media allows candidates to reach out to voters directly, learn about their concerns, and offer solutions. With Google Ads, they can reach out to supporters and to people who are most likely to vote for them.
